Stairway to Present

This project began when our class had a discussion on Andy Warhol's American Supermarket exhibition.

We were inspired to recreate this piece because we saw it in 2-D and decided to make a 3-D version. The final sculpture was visually inspired by Piet Mondrian's painting (shown below).  Once we decided to represent how mass production is taking over our society opposed to a literal translation, our idea of a staircase built with plain boxes came about.  We wanted to show how everything has now become black and white in the eyes of the consumer.
Upon reaching this goal we had to overcome a few obstacles. One of them being that we didn't really know what position to put the boxes in. After continuously throwing the boxes in a random order and switching and turning them in every way possible, the staircase idea came to life by our art teacher Mrs. Roberts. Since we already had the same color boxes as in Piet Mondrian's painting below, we were able to re-create it in a staircase form.
